A Status of Maternal and Child Health in A Rural Area

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to develop the maternal-child health work in Korea. Aimed at grasping the real status of maternal child health in an rural area. This survey was conducted by the 16 interviews (students of Kyung--Hee School of Nursing) for 15 days, from July 23, 1974. The interviewers visited 174 women, who have one or more children with the questionnair and were residing in Seoha-Ri, Chowol-Myun, Kwangchoo-Kun, Kyungki--Do. Major findings from this study can be summarized as follows.

1. Basic characteristics of women.
The 35.6 percents of women wer 35 to 39 of age as the most proportion. The average age at interview is 38. 0 years.
The 75.8 percent of the women graduated the elementary school, it shows the low level of education The 54.0 percent of women was middle class of the living standard by speaking herself. t was high level comparatively.

2. Age at marriage and first delivery.
1) Age at marriage and first delivery women in the study area were found to be marrying at average age of 19.4 years.
The most proportion of women 27. 5 percent are 19 to 20 of age.
The 21. 8 percent of the women is 15 to 19 years as the most proportion.
The 46.5 percent of the women experience the first delivery at 20 to 23 years of age. The average age of first delivery is 22. 0 years of age.
2) The frequency of pregnancy and number of living child.
The majority experienced six pregnancy (15.0 percent).
The average frequency of delivery is 5.4 number.
The 28.1 percent of women had the four living children.
The average number of children is 4. 1.

3. The delivery environment.
The majority (95.4 percent) of women had the home delivery. In the method of cord cutting, the 97.8 percent of women used the scissors.
But the 89.6 percent of women who used scissors used the non-sterile scissors.

4. The attitude for family planning.
The 95.0 percent of women approved of family planning.
The 42.6 percent of women practiced the family planning now. And the 21.8 percent of 35 to 39 years of age practiced it as the most proportion. The 38.5 percent of women wanted the 4 children as the ideals number of children. And 36.2 percents wanted the 3 children. The majority wanted the 3 to 4 children.

5. The health of nowborn and infant.
1) The 98.8 percent of women breastfed the child. Only 2 percents used the bottle feeding.
2) In the weaning period, the two-thirds of the women represented the meaning of weaning as `befostcred by not milk or breastfeeding but another food".
The 58. 1 percent of women had warned the child after 2 years of age. And 40 percents within 1 year of age.
